When i had a directory, i mainly used templates from a member called Smub who is around a lot of high traffic forum's. (He is not a member here though)

He recently awhile ago, started up a business in which he and his team create free phpld templates along with matching wordpress themes.

Also they do custom work and you might want to check out there portfolio to see what they are capable of.

These templates are eye catching and w3c verified.
